Benin is the birthplace of Vodun. Visit working shrines and, in January, the national festival itself.
Not the Hollywood version. Vodun is a living religion here and an official one — 10 January is a national holiday. Depending on the day we visit active shrines, meet a priest, and see a Zangbeto or Egungun masquerade if one is out. Always with permission, and always on the community's terms.
